I could have fallen for you, my little one,
The very day we met on the collective farm.
I was a flesh-hungry, freshwater shark
From the island of Solentiname
Cutting a swathe through the black market;
You were my fat-thighed Antigone
With the fire of something in you
—righteous, intransigent, blonde as honey--
And turning pink in the coffee-harvesting sun.
At the end of the bed, the difference was clear:
My slick Italian brothel creepers
Snuggled up to your blunt-toed Birkenstocks
Like a killer sub to a balsa raft.
Such injustice left to read, left to right.
