Good Food

Sophia Kaszuba
From:   Like a Beast of Colours. Beach Holme Publishing, 1998

Chicken and potatoes baked until
the whole house smells of inhaled earth.
The stars send white lines down into the ground.
You walk through the yard and open the gate.
The stars move through you, swift
then swift again. You are not even tired yet.
The chestnut tree stands tall like your brother.
The babies of the garden feel with their feet,
they move over everything
pulling it slightly to the right
and then to the left.

The good food is for us. We tell ourselves as story.
Mother says, one more bite
and then the child will grow
big as a potato in the ground.
She serves our meal on the rose-patterned plates.
Here, let us make love with spoons
slowly together
(I copy the motion and you copy the motion).

We are deep in the centre, fixed and very slow.
