Highway 10

Tonight along Highway 10,
the evening will release the trees from the heat,
open the deep dark avenue of cool shadows,
and the line of cars will follow each other
deeper into the hard beautiful land up north,
the Milky Way flowing like
a field of white ermine over night grass,
the roadside redolent with dew and settling heat,
and the crickets of Paradise,
Lorca's fierce violinists, singing
dark fiery lust and heaven all night.
