From: Recent Mistakes. Turnstone, 1988.
Only a fragment now
of something we wanted to say
our broken urn
"And I knew these people..."
but have lost the thread
and will stand by my words
waiting
though the boat is deep
and water swims round my eyes
I miss you
will now forever
as the world is round and turns
and though my ears lie flat, unperturbed
our stars are near
and the fish come out
We will waver on our beaches
magnetized
our children crying
our lost blue-veined babies
Leave your cold dinner
write me once more over your table
and hold me under
our legs entwined
like seaweed
your mouth on my neck
a prodigal desire returning and turning
I see you in deep water
singing, your mouth full of tears
treading a dark undertow
But tell me
while I still remember
while you can touch me
what were you going to say
what were you turning to say
