A Particle of Life

George Thaniel
From:   The Fiddlehead, no. 169. Autumn, 1991. 33-35.

I said farewell
hoping that it would ease into a goodbye.
I perched on the solid rafter of today
hoping that it would turn into the raft of tomorrow
mobile over the quicksilver of the senses.

No sidereal avenues for me, not yet.

All I now hope for is a cyclamen's
vagrant nod to the light
the tentative scratch of a kitten on the cushion of time.

A particle of life
comely in its perishable beauty
a small strategy of sound and color
l'espace d'un matin.
