John Steffler

John Steffler was born in Toronto 13 November, 1947, and grew up in a rural area near Thornhill, Ontario.

He has an M.A. in English (1974) from the University of Guelph. Thesis: "The Origin and Development of Los: a Study of the Prophetic Poetry of William Blake." His B.A. (Honours) in English was from University College, University of Toronto, 1971. Areas of concentration: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century British Literature. Other areas of study: French, European History, Chinese Philosophy, Japanese Literature in Translation.

EMPLOYMENT:
1975-98: Dept. of English, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University of Newfoundland: professor.
1997: Dept. of English, University of Guelph, sessional fiction instructor (one course). Banff Centre: fiction instructor (November).
1974-75: Department of English, MUN: sessional lecturer.
1973-74: Teaching Assistant and Sessional Lecturer, University of Guelph.
1963-73: Farm hand, janitor, carpenter, deck hand,library clerk, shoemaker, free-lance editor, substitute teacher.


John Steffler currently lives in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where he teaches in the English Department of Memorial University's Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

John Steffler's books of poems include That Night We Were Ravenous (McClelland and Stewart 1998), The Wreckage of Play (McClelland and Stewart, 1988) and The Grey Islands (McClelland and Stewart, 1985). His novel The Afterlife of George Cartwright was shortlisted for the 1992 Governor General's Award for fiction and won the Smithbooks/ Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.
