Midsummer Lovers
Richard Outram
From: The Essential Richard Outram. Erin, Ont. : Porcupine's Quill, 2011.
What is it in the fountained elm
drones on and on?
Death's fallible monotony
is come and gone ...
It is a high cicada scribes
the August afternoon.
Love in this blazed panoply
trumps too soon.
Life, let it be writ, my dear,
follows ever after.
We straggle, in the long cortège,
all ribald laughter.
