The Worm Girl

Laura Lush
From:   Hometown. Vehicule Press (Signal Editions), 1991.

I am the Worm Girl.
I drive a Wonderbread truck,
converted——good tires,
bumpers black as jujubes.
Every weekend I drive the Grey Bruce County,
all the silvered lakes,
birches waving like old drunks.
In back I have 25,000 worms
deep in earth
like coins in a chocolate cake.
Sometimes they wriggle to the top,
luminous as half-moons,
their skins onion-blue.
What they feel is my hand,
each finger a lure
urging them gently out
like a carrot's midwife.
I reward them with light.
