In Ukraine's Vorzel Forest
the dampness of my dacha

seeps into my bones
through the thick slab
of a too short mattress
which assaults my pampered body.

How many tee-shirts
does it take
to keep warm?
The ancient Ukrainian moon
transparent like vodka
forces her way
through bars
of unscreened windows
and lays her head
on my pillow.
She tells me,
"Nothing is easy in Ukraine"
