John Terpstra has published seven books of poetry. His second, Forty Days and Forty Nights (Netherlandic Press, 1987) won the Bressani Prize for Poetry in 1988. In 1993, Captain Kintail (Netherlandic Press, 1992) won the CBC Radio Literary Competition for Poetry. The Church Not Made with Hands (Wolsak & Wynn, 1997) and Devil's Punch Bowl (St. Thomas Poetry Series, 1998) each won a Hamilton and Region Arts Council Poetry Book Prize, as did the CD, Nod Me In, Shake Me Out (Spoken Arts, 2000) which he made together with the pianist and composer, Bart Nameth, with whom he has worked for many years.
His work has also recently been anthologized in Poetry and Spiritual Practice: Selections from Contemporary Canadian Poets (St. Thomas Poetry Series, 2002), Henry's Creature: Poems and Stories on the Automobile (Black Moss Press, 2000), and New Canadian Poetry (Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2000).

In 2002, Gaspereau Press released his first book of prose. The creative non-fiction work, Falling into Place, is the product of his having lived in the city of Hamilton for the past twenty-five years, where he is self-employed as a cabinetmaker and carpenter. Gaspereau also published his book of poetry, Disarmament in 2003.
