When in the days
after the war
the few survivors
returned to their homes
dressed in mourning
they were received
with the question
"What? Are there
so many of you left?"
Those who could pray
for a heavenly kingdom
or to exhort
the Holy Mother
and who during that time
were not ashamed
to squeeze out
the last few coins
from the fugitives
of the ghettos
to strip them
of their last shirt
and only then
to deliver them up
to be killed
when they saw
there was still
a remnant
asked in astonishment:
"From where do they come?"
