At early morning
how soothing to wake
within the past's blue walls
where memories in black and white
smile from small frames
unchanging
and warm to a rose afghan
unrumpled across the foot of the bed
that lays out knitted square after square
their quiet reflected in the dresser mirror
along with wildflowers embroidered
above the pillow-full headboard.
Here, nothing hurries to be somewhere else.
Even sunshine is filtered
through stillness.
While out by the road,
faint warbles and chirps
are rustling the apple tree
here, each still rectangle waits
for long blue curtains
to open
and onto a smoothed-taut spread, a cat
to purr into her morning stretch
and loll in the light.
