For Sharon, November 1, 1999.
In half-light, I see the photograph
in the mirror: white dress and hat
encasing shadows on your face,
me nearly invisible in black suit,
a wing of white collar at my throat,
a retrospective flutter in my heart.
Each of our heads leans to each
as if teased with an urge to touch,
faces bronze like candlelit coins.
By lights sorcery we change sides.
I transpose left. You move right.
Our clasped hands reverse grips.
Weve learned to make this trade
look easy, our occult science
defying space to take the others place.
