UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO LINKS
My classical education gave me to tools to write with — I was given a solid grounding in grammar and syntax, as well as exposure to the great classics of literature. An unfortunate home life meant that I spent a lot of time in imaginary places as a child. Growing up in an era without television, computers, videos etc. resulted in my spending a great deal of time with pencils and notebooks. So writing has always been a big part of my life. I need the discipline of writing for newspapers, with a word count and a deadline, but poetry remains my first love, because it engages the heart as well as the brain. It is very satisfying to me that I appear to have passed on my enjoyment of writing, as well as the ability to my children, who all write in one way or another.
