After Stein

Marianne Bluger
From:   Poetry Canada Review. 14.3 (1994): 5.

Pebble-skinned the navel-ended
one for tarts plus tea wedge two
now sunshine hits rock three
dories on the dazzle       sea?

But when comes winter
blank Ontario sorrow
and heedless art class
louts bump crowing
glowing snowblind through
all keen to paint
chrome yellow with shadow their shade
hits and this brash fruit sits
disconsolate if it could think
what's good what's true
smeared sadly green with blue...

And then from downtown maestro brats storm in
wanting fast themes and to score
juggling their throats they coax
astringent notes
                  but the racket knocks
my elliptical lovely
mutes with a bruising
                  tump off the shelf

And have you not read those dusty-shouldered
sincerely sincere philosophers
who first squeeze an essence
of citric acid out
then print the equivalent
nullity left: six sad skins
and clouds in a glass
I am sorry to say it 'invalid piss'

o don't

and haven't any of you guessed
the mercy of quiet
and a lover who lets me present
my already thank-you quite lemons
