concerning mr ambrose

mr ambrose ran the nursery down the road
grew trees and bushes mainly
no flowers that i recall          he had one hand
and a hook where the other hand should have been
he could trim a bush efficiently
i liked to watch him do it
there was a touch of horror
to the watching which i enjoyed

he's dead now but just yesterday i thought of him as i passed the place
his nursery used to be and i wondered did they bury the hook with him
and isn't it strange to think of his bones and his hook lying there in the dark
coffin and finally just
                                             the hook
