Place has always been very important to me. Different landscapes have different characters just as various kinds of animals do. Partly for this reason I've always been interested in the long-term interaction between people and the place they inhabit. This process is especially striking in Newfoundland where nature is rowdy and naked, and people fit right in.

And the physical world soaks up time. A place holds an impression of everything that has ever happened there. The human past lives on in its physical setting, even in the air, in the local light. The past is alive all around us; it belongs to us and gives us an extra range of feelings and insights, if we let it.
