Awards and Honours

  • Hilroy Fellowship, l976 (awarded for organizing and successfully completing the Prairie Writers Workshop at Evan Hardy Collegiate in l977).
  • Saskatchewan Arts Board Writing Grant awarded in l987.
  • Appointed Writer-in-Residence, Saskatoon Public Library for the l988-89 year.
  • Awarded a Founders' Award from the Saskatchewan Writers Guild in l990.
  • Co-founded Thistledown Press in l975 and served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors from l975 to 2000.
  • Have been elected to and have served on the Executives of: Saskatchewan Writers Guild, The League of Canadian Poets, Prairie Publishers Group (served as President for two years), The Literary Press Group (a national organization of literary publishers) and the Association of Canadian Publishers.
  • Poet Laureate for the Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament in Saskatoon, June 1993 and again in Regina in 2002.
  • Awarded Life Member status in The League of Canadian Poets in 1998.
  • Given readings (dramatic performances) of my work in every province of Canada, in many parts of the United States, and in Europe, including a reception and reading in my honour at the Residence of the Canadian Ambassador in Oslo, Norwa in 1998.
  • Appointed the first Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan in November, 2000 by the Government of Saskatchewan and served in that role from 2001 to 2004.
  • Invited to attend the Lahti International Writers' Reunion in Finland, June 2001 as Canada's English-language writer.
  • Artist-in-Residence at Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus of the U. Of Saskatchewan, September 2001, June 2006, June 2007.
  • Awarded Saskatoon Book Award for Leaving Holds Me Here at Saskatchewan Book Awards, November 2001.
  • Named Honorary Spokesperson for the University of Saskatchewan Library's "Title Match 2002" campaign.
  • Presented the Mary Donaldson Memorial Lecture to the joint Conference of the Sask. Library Association and the Sask. Library Trustees Association, April 11, 2002.
  • Awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal at Government House in Regina, February 2003.
