2000

In December, thanks to a Canada Council travel grant, Penn participated in Samvad, "Dialogue", at Jaipur, India. This International Symposium on Canadian Theatre was sponsored by the Department of Drama of the University of Rajisthan, at the Arts Centre, Jawahar Kala Kendra (Rangayam) in Jaipur. Here, as well as at U. of Mumbai, U. of Rajisthan, and other colleges in India, she presented the poetic drama, VOCAL BRAIDING, written and performed with Patricia Keeney, with dramaturgy by Don Rubin. Penn also gave readings of her poetry and lectures on Canadian writing at Centres for Canadian Studies at the U. of Baroda and U. of Vallabhnagar as well as SNDT University in Mumbai and several more colleges like the International School for Girls, Jaipur and Shree Chandulai Nanavati Women's Institute in Mumbai. To these schools, Penn distributed Canadian books and her own CD's. Penn gave three day workshops to the Refresher course of college teachers of English at U of Mumbai, Santa Cruz, India, in December.
Penn gave her workshop on Sarasvati: the Muse and Creativity at WonderWorks, Toronto.
With Anne Anglin, Penn performed "Suite Ancient Egypt" at the launch of Four Women, King's College, London ON through the Centre for Studies in Creativity. Performing CD/CD-ROM, ON OUR OWN SPOKE, coast to coast. In BC with Pat Keeney, "Vocal Braiding" was presented at several venues. Penn performed at Scarborough Arts Council to celebrate Poetry Contest 2000 and at the Toronto Dollar Community Works "Imagine Difference" readers series. She helped launch Kairos at Art Bar. Penn gave a talk at the AGM, League of Canadian Poets Performance Panel: "From Page to Stage". Penn and Susan McMaster recorded a collage of their sound poems, "Tender Lions", at Alrick Huebener's Ottawa studio. Bill Gilliam, John Magyar and Penn presented ON OUR OWN SPOKE at MSAC in Guelph as part of the launch of FOUR WOMEN, Red Kite Press.

1999

Reading at Bishop's College School, Lennoxville; Monaco's, Hamilton; Art Bar, Toronto. Reading tour of WHEN THE HEART PARTS to Vancouver, Hornby Island, Vancouver Island. In Toronto, Anne Anglin and Penn performed "Flush, Flash, Flood" and "Night Orchestra" at the Hart House Library. Art Bar, Oasis and 360 Club. They presented "When The Heart Parts" in Playwrights' Cabaret, Theatre Passe Muraille and Factory Lab Theatre. Penn and Susan McMaster recorded a collage of their sound poems, "Tender Lions", at Alrick Huebener's Ottawa studio. Penn with Honey Novick and Dan Sargeant performed for the Poets For Peace celebration at Oasis in Toronto. At Art Bar, Penn read to launch an issue of "Intangible" magazine and celebrate 30 year anniversary for Black Moss Press. She performed from WHEN THE HEART PARTS on June 26 with Anne Anglin at Theatre Passe Muraille and in the Playwrights' Cabaret, Factory Theatre Lab, Toronto. The poems from WHEN THE HEART PARTS were expanded to an hour-long sound opera, including "The Net of Elementals". The whole piece was performed at University of Guelph, November 1999 with Anne Anglin, John Blackwood at the University of Guelph, as part of a conference on "A Visionary Tradition: Canadian Literature and Culture at the Turn of the Millennium". The CD, WHEN THE HEART PARTS, was launched in Toronto at Oasis and RiotArt at 360 Club.
Penn presented a weekend on Sarasvati: the Muse and Creativity at Gaden Choling, Toronto, and in Duncan on Vancouver Island.
Penn gave writing workshops at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville April 24th and Ottawa at the Masc Festival Young Author's Festival in Ottawa, April 26-28. In May, she judged all four categories of poetry for the Conference of Independent Teachers of English Poetry and presented prizes to the winners, with a reading of her poetry at St. George College School.

1998

Reading at Bishop's College School, Lennoxville; Vox Feminarum, Waterloo; Monaco's, Hamilton; Art Bar, Toronto. Reading tour to Saskatoon, Vancouver, Salt Spring Island, Vancouver Island, Whitehorse and Yukon with sounding workshops. "Stone Soup Sounding", with Anne Anglin, Penn and James Harbeck, was recorded by John Magyar of PsychoSpace Sound at the "Abundance" Concert, Church of the Holy Trinity, Toronto, November 1998.

1997

A short story, "Island Worlds" in Scenes (Spring '97). With Ann Armin on viola, Penn performed for SCENES Live! and SCRIBES & MUSES! at the Rivoli, Toronto. Her work-shop, What Springs To Mind, included a weekend in August '97 at Novalis, Beaverton, ON.

1996

Writing workshops based on her book on creativity, What Springs To Mind, in Aurora, Beaverton, Durham, Lennoxville, London & Ottawa as well as a Festival of writing at Bishop's University, Lennoxville. Penn and Daphne Marlatt gave readings for the conference "Writing the Self out of Silence" at York U. With Egyptologist Daniel Kolos, she participated in a daylong conference at AMORC Toronto, "Egyptian Mysteries". She participated in a symposium on ancient civilizations at the University of Delaware, "Return to the Source".
At The Music Gallery in Toronto, Penn performed her dramatic homage to India, "Temporary Harmonies", with musician/composers Butterfly Effects (Wes Wraggett and Richard Warner), Penn's work was featured in Arc ('96) with a profile on her by Norma Lundberg.

1995

Tour in India (Jan.-Mar.): readings and seminars sponsored by Indian Institute for Canadian Studies at 8 women's groups and colleges in Mumbai. Writer in Residence, SNDT Women's University, Mumbai. Jazz gigs at Cameron House, Toronto with Handslang based on her sound piece, Jamming in the Bardo.

1994

Epiphanies taped at the Glen Gould Studio, with Anne Anglin and David Prentice. Featured on a CBC FM special, "Sounding Off" and on CIUT. Penn's play, What The Ear Hears Last, was produced in May at The Gathering, Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto. With Anne Anglin, Penn gave 6 benefit performances for What The Ear Hears Last. Featured Performer at the Rites of Spring, National Library, London Public Library, Poetry Festival, Sheridan College, Oakville. Readings, R2D2 Bookstore, Women in Print Bookstore, Vancouver. In 1993 and 1994, she orchestrated The Poetry Café with 17 schools participating in a day long festival of poetry which her students generated over 8 days of writing workshops. The poems are published in Twelfth Key, a poetry magazine Penn edits for student writing, with her workshops described.

1993

Whitehorse; Vancouver Public Library, R2D2Books; Denman Island, Salt Spring Island, Gabriola Island, Mayne Island, North York General Hospital, Idler Pub (Toronto), Hornby Island, Northern Writers' Circle, Whitehorse. The League of Poets sponsored a second tour of nine readings and workshops in the Yukon as well as BC in April/May, 1993. In Whitehorse, she opened the Writers' Festival and attended a 'celebrated authors' supper for Writers' Development Trust, where she won the prize for best poem composed and performed. She read at U.B.C., bookstores and twice at the Vancouver Library in gala events.

1992

Nakai Theatre Writer's Festival in Whitehorse, Yukon, April/May. Penn was honoured as Foremother of League of Canadian Poets, Feminist Caucus, A.G.M, National Library, Ottawa. In Oct., she was one of four speakers during Humber College's Silver Anniversary Speaker Series. Her topic was "Silence/ Violence: Breaking the Code".
