Poem for My Son at Age Two

Libby Scheier
From:   Second Nature.

when you wake up screaming
at the hour of the wolf
and fall asleep again
the scream repeats inside my head
many times
till morning

you wake in me
a sound I had forgotten
hearing
voicing

when you laugh
at nothing I can see
and make me laugh
you wake in me
laughing
I had forgotten

when you will eat
only if we share the same food
from the same plate
you wake in me
so much I had forgotten
I am ashamed

but joyful
for learning again
things I had forgotten
