Hiram and Jenny

Richard Outram
From:   Hiram and Jenny. Erin, Ont. : Porcupine's Quill, 1988.

Banjo, by-and-by.
Woman, everywhere
out in the basswood night
and Jenny is there.

Is in the next empty cabin
in the next room is near
musk now snake-naked
yes Jenny is here.

And bucks plunge from the sun
and trouts leap from the sea
and fall back and waves waves
break Jenny and me.

Morning is scrawny, scorched
where the dog-star shone.
Hiram I lay me down to die.
Jenny is gone.
