Carapace

Laura Lush
From:   Carapace. (Palimpsest Press, 2011).

Some foetus or fiddlehead curled
to a fountainhead of flesh in shell.
Spine and ribs fused to bony plates.
Your buffer against stones and the bruised
keel of your back-to-front lifeline---your ridge
of chance. Cracks that fill in themselves.
Fill with bone. And heal.
