"A writer looking for subjects inquires not after what he loves best, but after what he alone loves at all," wrote Annie Dillard in The Writing Life. That sentence illuminates what leads me to write, a truth that became self-evident to me only after seeing those words written on the page. Another quotation haunts me, one by poet Anne Sexton, who said, "Images are the heart of poetry," and though there are no doubt other helpful sign posts along the way (and poetic guides from Amichai to Zagajewski), it is by those two statements that I take my direction in writing.
