Desperation

Jill Battson

I am driving through the streets of Delhi
in a heated stunned sickness
I am walking beside canals in Venice
holding the hand of a man I don't know
when you fall asleep in the open air
it feels like madness
I am climbing the hill at Sigriya
to the point of salvation
I am kissing my sister's lips
on a hillside in Wiltshire
when you listen to the voice in the wind
it feels like there is no tomorrow
I am lurking in back streets of Barcelona
hanging with the whores
I am heartbeaten at the castle of Visegrád
seduced by a another woman's husband
when you cut yourself preparing food
it feels like you are almost there
I am trancing in the palace at Samode
mistaking seconal for tylenol
I am sweating on the pavement in Austin
sleeping in a stranger's bed
when you travel rapid continents
it feels like desperation
I am marble blind at the Taj Mahal
looking for redemption
I am sitting at my desk in Toronto
trying to figure out what hit me.
